Benedicto which earned a well-deserved reputation for its quality Maritime Education until in May 1986 when it closed due to management decision. In SY 1987-88 the school re-opened under the management of Asian Mari-Tech Development Corporation (AMTDC) with a 10-year lease-purchase agreement. In December 1988, it was adjudged as one of the top ten maritime schools per survey conducted by the Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (PAMI) and the Maritime Industry (MARINA). In June 1996, Asian Mari-Tech Dev't Corp. (AMTDC) acquired the properties of then Visayan Maritime Academy. with its growth brought about by scholarship programs, international linkages for more training and job placements and offerings of more non-maritime courses, the school was renamed VMA Global College.
